Out in the fields of the Lakhish region, in the northern Negev some fifty kilometres south of Tel Aviv, Kiryat Gat was founded in 1954 as a development town and took its name from the Philistine city of Gath. Industry carried it for decades; the recent boom comes from Carmei Gat, a huge new district built to the north-east from the 2010s. The town is home to communities of immigrants from Ethiopia and the former Soviet Union, and religious families have moved into the new apartment blocks in large numbers. Access is straightforward: Kiryat Gat station is on the Tel Aviv-Beersheba railway, Route 40 and Highway 6 pass to the west, and Route 35 links Ashkelon with the Hebron hills. Practical tip: the station is close to the old centre but a long way from Carmei Gat, so check the neighbourhood before deciding between walking, bus and taxi.
